DOT Tomography of the Solar Atmosphere VII. Chromospheric Response to Acoustic Events
نویسندگان
چکیده
We use synchronous movies from the Dutch Open Telescope sampling the G band, Ca iiH, and Hα with five-wavelength profile sampling to study the response of the chromosphere to acoustic events in the underlying photosphere. We first compare the visibility of the chromosphere in Ca iiH and Hα, demonstrate that studying the chromosphere requires Hα data, and summarize recent developments in understanding why this is so. We construct divergence and vorticity maps of the photospheric flow field from the G-band images and locate specific events through the appearance of bright Ca iiH grains. The reaction of the Hα chromosphere is diagnosed in terms of brightness and Doppler shift. We show and discuss three particular cases in detail: a regular acoustic grain marking shock excitation by granular dynamics, a persistent flasher which probably marks magnetic-field concentration, and an exploding granule. All three appear to buffet overlying fibrils, most clearly in Dopplergrams. Although our diagnostic displays to dissect these phenomena are unprecedentedly comprehensive, adding even more information (photospheric Doppler tomography and magnetograms, chromospheric imaging and Doppler mapping in the ultraviolet) is warranted.

Leakage of photospheric acoustic waves into non-magnetic solar atmosphere
Aims. This paper aims to look at the propagation of synthetic photospheric oscillations from a point source into a two-dimensional non-magnetic solar atmosphere. It takes a particular interest in the leakage of 5-min global oscillations into the atmosphere, and aims to complement efforts on the driving of chromospheric dynamics (e.g. spicules and waves) by 5-min oscillations. Methods. A model s...
متن کاملExcitation of Chromospheric Wave Transients by Collapsing Granules
The excitation of acoustic waves is studied using 3D numerical simulations of the non-magnetic solar atmosphere and the upper convection zone. Transient acoustic waves in the atmosphere are excited at the top of the convective zone (the cooling layer) and immediately above in the convective overshoot zone, by small granules that undergo a rapid collapse, in the sense that upflow reverses to dow...
متن کاملObservational Signatures of Simulated Reconnection Events in the Solar Chromosphere and Transition Region
We present the results of numerical simulations of wave-induced magnetic reconnection in a model of the solar atmosphere. In the magnetic field geometry we study in this article, the waves, driven by a monochromatic piston and a driver taken from Hinode observations, induce periodic reconnection of the magnetic field, and this reconnection appears to help drive long-period chromospheric jets. B...
متن کاملResonant energy conversion of 3 - minute intensity oscillations into Alfvén waves in the solar atmosphere
Nonlinear coupling between 3-minute oscillations and Alfvén waves in the solar lower atmosphere is studied. 3-minute oscillations are considered as acoustic waves trapped in a chromospheric cavity and oscillating along transversally inhomogeneous vertical magnetic field. It is shown that under the action of the oscillations the temporal dynamics of Alfvén waves is governed by Mathieu equation. ...
متن کاملThe solar chromosphere at high resolution with IBIS II. Acoustic shocks in the quiet internetwork and the role of magnetic fields
Context. The exact nature of the quiet solar chromosphere, and especially its temporal variations, are still subject of intense debate. One of the contentious issues is the possible role of magnetic field in structuring the quieter solar regions. Aims. We characterize the dynamics of the quiet inter-network chromosphere by studying the occurrence of acoustic shocks and their relation with the c...
